Walls and insulation
The plaster products and the insulation materials for the walls have been selected because of their environmental profile.
Wall structures
Fermacell is a plaster board which is made from 80% gypsum and 20% recycled paper fibres. These two natural raw materials are mixed together and then compressed with water – no other binders – under high pressure to form robust boards which are subsequently dried, impregnated with a water-repellent agent and cut to the required formats. Fermacell costs about 20% more than a standard wallboard equivalent but it has greater impact resistance and much greater sound insulation. It provides a moisture rated, one hour firewall. Fermcell gives off no harmful fumes and it promotes a healthy indoor atmosphere.
Insulation
Rockwool is a stone-based insulation, sourced from abundant lava deposits of volcanic rocks which are melted in a cupola furnace. As the re-melted lava comes out of the furnace, it is spun, given water repellency treatment and bound together in a wool-like fleece. The result is inorganic and ideal for thermal insulation, fire protection, acoustic control and environmental purposes. Not only are Rockwool off-cuts, other Rockwool production ‘waste’ and Rockwool returned from site recycled back into the manufacturing process but carefully selected by-products from other industries are also reused. These recycled or reused materials represent more than 50% by weight of finished Rockwool output, up to 30 % of which are by-products from the steel-making industry.
Paints
A special range of paints has been selected that avoids toxic chemicals and reduces indoor air pollution.
